Jorge Obregón. Un retrato del Tioempo

Museo Kaluz

Through 6 January, 2025

The exhibition began with a project which resulted in Obregón's admission to the National System of Creator's of Art in 2020. The work is a series of landscapes integrated with a conceptual approach and a three-year research process that contemplates the crossover between painting, anthropology, astronomy and documentary archive.

The sites Obregón chose for the paintings correspond to symbolic and ritual spaces given their usefulness and importance to the Mexican agricultural cycle. Each place has one or several engraved stones from pre-Hispanic times that mark the site from which an observer will see the sunrise from a particularly symbolic point of the orographic configuration. To mark these dates, the cultures of the central highlands used three calendars: tonalpohualli -counting the days-, xiuhpohualli -a whole year of 365 days-, and xiuhmolpilli - an attestation of years and corresponding to a period of 52 years.
